The Merchant of Venice

I really love this Shakespeare play-- and not just because I'm slightly obsessed with Shakespeare (seriously, just because I have everything Shakespeare ever wrote (sometimes x2) doesn't mean I'm crazy, does it?). Anyway, let me share with you some of my favorite lines from this amazing play.

I could start with the famous Shylock lines, "If you prick us, do we not bleed..." or the cask's poem, "All that glisters is not gold..." or Portia's "The quality of mercy is not strain'd..." but I won't. Here are some awesome, lesser-known ones.

"His reasons are as two grains of wheat hid in two bushels of chaff: you shall seek all day ere you find them, and when you have them, they are not worth the search." -- Bassanio

"I can easier teach twenty what were good to be done, than be one of the twenty to follow mine own teaching." -- Portia

"The villainy you teach me, I will execute." -- Shylock

Shakespeare was a wise old crow.

  1. Yay! I really liked that play also. And don't feel bad. I never liked Shakespeare either, though taking the Shakespeare class that Dr. Byrd teaches gave me a greater appreciation for his writing. You should read Cymbeline. It's probably one of my other favorites, now that I'm slightly more well-read as far as Shakespeare is concerned.

  2. I've always wanted to read The Merchant of Venice, but have never taken the time to. I know my sister loved it though. Haha, I don't think your crazy even though you've got doubles of some of Shakepeare's works.

  3. Wait! For some reason, I read what you said incorrectly. So you've always loved Shakespeare? Interesting...

  4. It's all right, Christen, I completely understand. Shakespeare is a bit jaded, isn't he? I'll have to read that one. I haven't yet. Also, if you ever read Medieval Literature, don't read his "Troilus and Cressida" because it's very... uhm... cynical.

Thanks, Ali. You should read it at some point. I might let you borrow it if you ask.
